World's largest tapestry heading for Dunblane
25 AugustThe world's longest tapestry - which tells the story of a famous episode in Scotland's history is coming to Dunblane next month - going on show at the Cathdral.
The Prestonpans tapestry will be on show at Dunblane Cathedral from Friday 10th to Monday 13th September - with the highlight of the weekend being the opportunity to talk to the soldiers of 1745, who will be 'billeted' at Dunblane on Saturday 11th September.
The new tapestry is the result of more than 15,000 hours work by 200 volunteers, and tells the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's early campaign in 1745, ending with the Jacobite army's victory over government forces at the East Lothian town.
Each of the tapestry's one metre panels shows a scene from the journey of the Prince and his followers, dating from his landing in Scotland in August 1745 to his victory at Prestonpans the following month.
The 140-metre long work is made up of more than 10 million stitches, and was commissioned by the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust.
The tapestry was designed by community-based artist Andrew Crummy, who received historical advice from scholars Martin Margulies and Arran Johnston, to make sure that the images were authentic.
